His father was a bootlegger, smuggling rum to the USA, & Finlay was sent, aged 6, to Larchfield, a boarding school in Helensburgh, Scotland, where WH Auden had recently joined the staff

Ths statues around the entrance to the offices of the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company in Govan. Sculpted by James Pittendrigh MacGillivary in 1890, they represent an Engineer (left) and a Shipwright (right).
