Growing out Zoroastrianiam, Mithraism was, for a time, a major religion in the western Roman Empire and some believe it came close to becoming the dominant one (rather than Christianity). Others dispute this possibility.

Either way, Mithras appears on a number of Victorian buildings around the city, along with a wide variety of Greek, Roman, Egyptian and pagan religious iconography.

We often think of Victorian Britain as being staunchly Christian, but their buildings are decorated wih sculptures from many different religious traditions. In this case, it's the Romano-Persian God Mithras on the 1890s Sun Life Building on West George Street on Glasgow.
