The Burghers of Calais by Auguste Rodin
In the garden of the Muse Rodin in Paris stands one of the most human monuments ever cast in bronze. The Burghers of Calais by Auguste Rodin.
Six men walk toward what they believe will be their deaths. History tells us that during the siege of Calais in 1347, six citizens offered themselves to King Edward III to save their starving town. They went barefoot, clothed in simple tunics, ropes around their necks, carrying the keys of the city.
The Burghers of Calais, Le Jardin de Rodin (Rebecca Budd Photo Archives May 2, 2023)When I stood before them, I expected to see despair. Instead, I felt inevitability. There was no theatrical grief. No dramatic collapse. No raised fists. Only acknowledgment. Each face seemed to say: This is the path before me. Rodin did not sculpt heroes in triumph. He sculpted the moment after the decision has been made when resistance has quieted and fate has been accepted.
The men do not look at one another. Each walks alone, though they move together. Their garments hang heavily. Their hands speak of inward reckoning. One shields his face, not in panic, but in contemplation. Another clutches the key with grave steadiness. Another seems already distant, as if part of him has stepped beyond the world.
The Burghers of Calais, Le Jardin de Rodin (Rebecca Budd Photo Archives May 2, 2023)This is not spectacle. It is conscience. In the quiet of the garden. Trees overhead, Paris unfolding beyond the walls, the sculpture feels almost monastic. The shallow pool reflects them like memory. What moved me most was not sacrifice, but consent.
The Burghers of Calais, Le Jardin de Rodin (Rebecca Budd Photo Archives May 2, 2023)The inevitable does not always roar. Sometimes it arrives softly a diagnosis, a duty, an aging parent, a turning season in ones life. We do not choose the circumstance, but we choose how we walk toward it. These men walk with dignity. They do not resist their fate with bitterness. They acknowledge it. And in that acknowledgment, they become timeless.

Isnt this baby adorable who would not want one XD
This one gave me some problems with the nest as I was not liking the previous versions at all untill I build the nest from smaller twigs and roots to make it look as realistic as I could get.
I want to make more of these with different baby dragons

The Bodleian Library is one of the oldest libraries in Europe, and in Britain is second in size only to the British Library. Together, the Bodleian Libraries hold over 13 million printed items. First opened to scholars in 1602, it incorporates an earlier library built by the University in the 15th century to house books donated by Humfrey, Duke of Gloucester. Since 1602, it has expanded, slowly at first but with increasing momentum over the last 150 years, to keep pace with the ever-growing accumulation of books, papers, and other materials, but the core of the old buildings has remained intact.  Bodleian Library
