Love these beautifully sculpted green men on the obelisk sundial in King's Park on the Southside of Glasgow. This is one of three Victorian replicas of the 1635 Mannerist sundial at Newbattle Abbey House in Midlothian.

Indiana State Fair 2026 Photos, Part 5: The Year in Lego

Previously on Midlife Crisis Crossover:Its that time again! The Indiana State Fair is an annual celebration of Hoosier pride, farming, food, and 4-H, with amusement park rides, cooking demos, concerts by musicians either nearly or formerly popular, and farm animals competing for cash prizes without their knowledge. My wife Anne and I attend each year as a date-day to seek new forms of creativity and imagination within a local context...Lego is a frequent sight at our State Fair. 4-H kids and competitors in other art contests routinely turn in works of Lego as their favorite sculpting medium. Some submissions are store-bought kits some are original creations. Theres nothing emphatically Hoosier about them. To my knowledge we have no Lego factory and no Legoland theme park. Indiana was not a beachhead for Danish explorers. Not even the old Lego Indiana Jones set have anything to do with Indiana per se, much as we might wish to contrive otherwise. But at our State Fair theres always room for Lego.This year we attended the fair so late into its run -- the last day was this past Sunday -- that the rest of this miniseries is now a retrospective instead of a concurrent update. Figuring in advance that that'd happen, I tried to convince myself to take fewer photos so I could wrap up our short-term State Fair memories as quickly as possible and I could get back to all the other pending posts I've been procrastinating. I even thought to myself going in, "You do not have to snap pics of every Lego ever." Here we wound up anyway, having once again accumulated enough Lego works for a standalone gallery. Behold the power of bright building blocks!

Heard that Yayoi Kusama passed away yesterday at age 97. We saw a few of her sculptures/art installation when we were in Norway a couple of years ago. They're really quite striking.

The Kelpies

Because this was my second or third (depending on how you count) proper wood sculpture, I had to take a proud selfie with it when it was starting to take shape.

This is how it looked like unpainted and before final sanding and waxing.

A wooden toy horse for my mothers 50th birthday.
I carved it completely by hand, and made it detachable with a swing rocker. I didn't want the horse to have bridle or saddle, but I did make it look aged with how I treated the wood after painting.

Making a splash of color in tropical luster

Here's a couple heads I made when I decided to start practicing ears more (they're difficult for me to get right), and I threw in a couple pics of one of the pumpkin guys so you can see what it looked like before it was fired and glazed.
Here's a few more pieces I've made, the head with one eye didn't actually survive the first firing unfortunately, if I remember correctly someone else's piece exploded and took mine out, but these are the risks of ceramics!

Its been so nice to be at VAR gallery teaching in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The class sizes have been small, students have been amazing and in the mornings and evenings I have had time to work on projects that have been on hold for months

One of those projects is a vibe coded website- that does all the math to help me make 3D neon spring spheres and ovals in any size. I tested it last night with Lavender - a pretty out of production color my friend Steph brought from a shop in New Orleans. Future improvements include making the heat distance inches display in 1/16th rounded fractions (with centimetres option), an image overlay so I could make a 3D globe neon, and reworking the rendering that happens on device to make the site more responsive.
I also played around with scraps of color and make a fun doodle. VAR has been a friendly Midwest, US. Art Oasis, with a friendly, energetic art community around it.
