One of the heads at the base of the arch around the door of Saint Andrew's Cathedral on Clyde Street in Glasgow. The church was designed by J. Gillespie Graham and was built in the 1810s. I love the expression on this face!

I love this little sculpted cat on a ledge of the Helensburgh Municipal Building. Apparently, it was based on a cat which was hanging around the site when this part of the building was being constructed on 1906.
It's actually quite surprising how often such statues of cats appear on older buildings, and even some newer ones!
Take a moment out of your day to savor the forms and textures of Wendell Castle's work. Along with David Nash, his work made an impression on me when I was in art school decades ago and I'd lost track of him. Glad to know he's still active.
In 1851, Richard Owen used his influence with Prince Albert, Queen Victorias husband, to propose the financing of the three-dimensional reconstruction of the first known dinosaurs: Megalosaurus, Iguanodon and Hylaeosaurus, for the closure of the first international exposition in modern European history: the Crystal Palace exhibition, that would be placed in Sydenham Park, south of London, instead of the original site in Londons Hyde Park.
Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, sculptor and natural history artist, was commissioned to make the full-size replicas of the dinosaurs and other extinct reptiles for Sydenham Park.

The statues lay in the river until 1949 when they were finally recovered and at this point it was found War's right arm was missing. This was replaced in 1951 and a plaque was added to mark the occasion. The missing arm was eventually recovered from the river in 1995, but by then replacement had blended in with the rest of the statue and it was decided not to attempt to re-attach the original one.
In March 1941, the neighbouring areas of Clydebank and Glasgow were extensively targetted by German bombers, leading to the death of over one thousand people and much damage. One of the areas hit was the Kelvin Way Bridge in the city's West End where an exploding parachute mine sent two of its four groups of sculptures into the river below, including this one of War (right) and Peace (left).
