Ice minataur, ice sculpture at the IJsbeeldenfestival Zwolle, the Netherlands.

Photo in portrait format

Very cool, beautiful sculptures and lighting. Too busy with kids to take time for good photos (and that is as it should be!). This was the only photo that turned out remotely alright, except for the poor minautaur's horns.

Highly reccomend, amazing exhibit!

Sculptures that commemorate some historical figure (whether or not the person deserves some kind of public recognition) can be rejected for various reasons: use of economic resources (that could be used for something more useful) and change in the public's perception of that person. A person admired in the present may be rejected in the future for various reasons. A good example of such a change in appreciation is that of Pushkin's sculptures in Ukraine.

Another problem is aesthetics. Many memorial sculptures are aesthetically very poor or, at the very least, "questionable".

Similarly, the one on the front of the City Chambers is actually, according to the sculptor who created it, "Truth, holding up the light of liberty".

In fact, the only true statue of Liberty in Glasgow, shown on the right here, is on a tenement in Queen's Park, which dates from 1886, making it the same age as the more famous, and much larger, version in New York.
