I recorded 2 songs for a 7 inch vinyl record to be presented with a book at this exhibit. One original and a Patti Smith cover. I'm on guitar, Carl from Zen Guerrilla on bass, my old bandmate from Turn Me On Deadman on drums and vocals by Lydia Walker.
The exhibit runs Sept 9 - Oct 13th. Peep the link for details and please boost!

Love these intricately sculpted column captials on Salmon, Son and Gillepsie's 1899 Glasgow Style British Linen Bank on Govan Road in Glasgow. Created by Francis Derwent Wood, they feature different activities, such as beekeeping, navigation and fishing.

I love the open cown on the top of the 1898 Kelvin Stevenson Memorial Church on Belmont Street in Glasgow, but I only noticed today that there's a line of animals around its base, which includes a fox, a sheep, a goat, some chickens, an owl, and around the back (so not visible in this photo), what appears to be a gorilla. I need to go back with a pair of binoculars to see if this last one is correct or if it's actually something else.

One little known fact is that it was positioned so that the statue of Queen Victoria at the top faces towards the High Court of the Justiciary courts on Saltmarket on the western side of Glasgow Green.

After the exhbition closed, there was a great deal of debate as to what should happen to it. Options included leaving it in Kelvingrove Park, moving it to Queen's Park or moving it to Glasgow Green. This was the option which was finally selected, so the fountain was dismantled and reconstructed at its current location, and it was unveiled on 27 August 1890, complete with crowds and speeches.

Happy Fountain Day! Today, marks the 124th anniversary of the inauguration of the Doulton Fountain on Glasgow Green, a day that at the time was designated Fountain Day. This is the largest terrcotta fountain in the world and it was created by the Doulton Company to mark Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887. It was first seen at the 1888 International Exhibition in Kelvingrove Park, and was one of its most popular attractions.

A powerful new , "I'm Fine," at this year's Burning Man, symbolizing Ukraine's unwavering resilience in the midst of ongoing war.

Created by Ukrainian artist Oleksiy Sai, the sculpture spells out "I'm Fine" using street signs, fences, and gates shattered by bullets and shrapnel from across . It's a powerful depiction of how everyday life has changed since the russian invasion in 2022.

My ended up continuing to bother me and so I ended up staying up past midnight tonight to make a new one that I like more and I am now using it as my new website banner.

I wasn't expecting to change it again so soon (just the next day) but the result is much better now and I've learned it is often wise to trust one's creative impulses and give due consideration to the composition and how things balance and sit together.

So, here's the new one, which is even smaller (at 128x128 pixels) and has a much better artistic feel, especially in context on my site.

If the image looks blurry on your system, then bicubic interpolation is probably being applied (which makes pixel art look worse). In that case, you'll need to view it on my site to see the proper effect.

Anyway, have a good night everyone and sleep well!

This month marked the beginning of Year Six for The Signifier. That's over five years of weekly updates of quality writing on & - thank you so much to those who have been with us from the start & welcome to our new readers, there's plenty to catch-up on :

One of the pieces at Burning Man this year is "I'm Fine," crafted from war-damaged materials from Ukraine. The artwork was co-created by Ukrainian artist Oleksiy Sai, DJ Anatoly Tapolsky, and former Deputy Defense Minister of Ukraine Vitaliy Deynega.

One of London's strangest statues - thought to depict Alfred the Great - can be seen in Trinity Church Square, Southwark. The top part - depicting a crowned, bearded man - could have been made in the late 18th century for the garden of Carlton House, Westminster. The bottom half, however, is likely from a Roman statue of the goddess Minerva & is dated to 80-130 AD. It is thought to have stood in a sanctuary on the site of nearby Tabard Square. The bottom part is of Bath stone, probably brought down the Thames from the Cotswolds. The upper part is of Coade stone, an artificial stone invented in the 1770s. The bottom part may have been used to give the statue a more 'medieval' appearance.

The majestic Norman architecture of Durham Cathedral in North East England has been the frame these last few weeks for the 'Peace Doves' installation by Peter Walker.
Thousands of paper doves hanging above the cathedral's crossing, it's quite a breath-taking sight.
They will remain in place until 4 September.

For glass artist Andrea Spencer, combinations of seaweed tendrils, bulbs, and fronds provide the starting point for an ongoing series of elegant sculptures.

The Secrets of the River God: The Apennine Colossus of Florence, Italy

Id never seen this sculpture before. I love how the artist, Giambologna, blended the figure with the natural surroundings.

I made the illustration in the 2000s for a former magazine of the Dutch Railways (Nederlandse Spoorwegen), called Rails, in which the book was discussed.

I completed the digital I mentioned and then altered and composited it into a dithered low-res (256x136) banner for my website.

I am reasonably happy with it for now, but it didn't come out quite how I imagined it, so definitely not entirely happy.

I'll probably make another attempt at a banner art piece like this for my site again in the future. This will suffice for now.

In the meantime though, it was fun to do some digital sculpting and turn then turn it into retro pixel art!

The sculpted objects are all digitally hand-made, except for the text (whose shape I made with 3DCoat's built-in text tool). I also used some of Krita's basic image effects to help composite the final image.

Anyway though, goodnight everyone!

Starting into the week-end. Still summer fortunately, still those mild temperatures at night. Why not taking a walk in the city, looking for opportunities for some nice pictures.
