African-American artists have often understandably turned to African art for inspiration. Some went to Africa, others researched the historical traditions of art from continental Africa. Twentieth century African-American philosopher Alain Locke suggested that African-American artists ought to use indigenous African art as inspiration or aesthetic model. This is an important part of the African-American art tradition, so I'm sharing some examples today.
