One of the instructors here, Brian Gillespie works at Rhino and 3D printed this surface mix gas oxygen torch from stainless steel.

It was fun getting to try it out. It heats nicely- the surface mix makes it much softer than a Carlisle. It basically won't liquify or burn the glass- but IS hot enough for bending, and is a pretty wide flame height (area).

The heavier wall borosilicate is interesting. Annoying that it may need to be annealed promptly, but it could be a bit more durable... And larger I do love my soft glass (soda lime wall thickness about 1.75mm).

This is making me want to get the German surface mix ribbon burner. Expensive, but will probably last forever.

It's me.

Some photos taken during the Glown Away Soiree the other night by Chris Barney the night watch.

I liked watching the bubbles float in front of the neon. Catching them floating in front was really tricky, so Chris floated a big bubble on the want and I held it in position.

Now I wanna have more of my work photographed in bubble! More colors please!

What do you think about this Medusa-shaped door-knocker (i have mixed feelings...)

Some people say its a woman. Some people say its a horse or a dog. Some people say that to call it any of those things is to miss the point. Whatever way you see it, it draws in the human eye.

Two days ago my friend Dani Kaes stopped by to give a pumping demo and a "stuffed tube" demo to the students. Basically Dani cuts a bunch of 10 and 12mm tubes up, cleans them with acetone or other solvent and then stuffs the little tube pieces inside another clear 15mm tube.
She processes them a little differently, using argon on the bombarder to gently heat the inner tubes, without getting the outer one too hot too quick and cracking things.

Its really neat shaking the stuffed tubes- their fill tubes rainbow jostle and jingle back an forth :)

Already seeing students scavenging for fancy color scraps to cut them into tiny pieces for stuffing :)

Here are some more pictures of the sculptures.

13 If you weren't a writer, what other creative avenues would you pursue

I pursue all. I find the separation between creative endeavours to be purely artificial.

Go write a painting, choreograph a novel, photograph a bit of philosophy, and sculpt a song.

today's instagram! we have: 1. giant wooden crane animatronic puppet from the Ile des machines in Nantes (highly recommend a visit there) 2. one of the characteristic Wallace-style fountains sculpted by Charles-August Lebourg which are found all across France 3. one of the enormous stones from Avebury, with sheep for scale.

Katie Stout's series of shapely pendant lamps illuminates lustrous, candy-colored glass.

Ceramic sculpture by Japanese artist Yamaguchi Mio, 2020s, whose work incorporates countless folds representative of unexpressed and hidden emotions.

'Goddelijk' - de dieptewerking door het contrast van dit kunstwerk is vanuit elke positie bijzonder 'Divine' - the depth effect through contrast of this artwork is extraordinary from any position.

Revisited my melon bug in Blender's Cycles, adding some textures, more balanced lighting and of course sub-surface scattering in the melon slice.
See a different post for the previous rendering, in MagicaCSG.

Exported the melon bug scene from MagicaCSG to Blender, using the Stanford PLY 3D file format, which includes vertex colors.

Here's a quick first Cycles renderer lighting test, using all-white matt materials.

More will follow. See other posts in this thread for more impressions.
