The beach becomes a giant art gallery each year as SWELL sculpture festival takes over Currumbin in Queenslands south-east. Almost 100 large-scale artworks are on display during the free, 10-day outdoor exhibition, now in its 24th year. Among the artists is invited guest Patricia Piccinini, whose bronze sculpture Salute to the Sun is a chimera, seamlessly moving between deer, tree, fungus, human and motorcycle. The works are on display until Sunday 20 September

Absolutely love this grotesque on the former Coats Memorial Church in Paisley. Built in 1894, this church was designed in a Gothic Revival style by H.J. Blanc and it's covered in some fantastic Gothic-inspired sculptures and carvings. It's now used as an events venue.

Last session sculpting Brittany tonight. I cleaned up a couple places on the figure but worked on portrait and hands mostly.Okay, I have gone through the over 65 submissions in my insert drawing here box and after much deliberation, have narrowed it down into two finalists. Laila's "everything is awesome" ribbon and Cara's "happy elephant".
I will turn one of them into a neon sign, mounted on either steel or plastic. Made out of tubes that cannot be bought. I have maxed out the brown in them... but they do have me wanting to make a small purple color pot- purple color bars are expensive.
tbh I actually want to just make the entire ribbon drawing including the brown scribbles and the "this one" -but that would be giant and need lots of transformers.
This is a tough choice. Both are so happy and joyful, and very makeable. I am curious what the folks on here think

I tested the colors pulled with Sean from both two weekends ago and from Monday. Yeah my phosphor coating is still "painterly" but the colors and browns sure are nice!
The Nickel Sulfur color pot was truly worth it! It is darker and arguably more brown than the bar browns. It does look black when it is off, however its low cost and overall brownness make it really special. I am reminded at just how effective the phosphor coating is in the areas of the color bar tubes that have flaked off.
I am already wanting to share some of these with some other friends wanting brown neon. As I begin to run low on red phosphor and start looking at other metal oxide chemicals to do another color furnace melt, I should also look to sell some of these tubes. I used to just tell interested benders to find glassblowers- but that is easier said than done- and the phosphor coating is a whole other craft to learn.
Hooray for brown light!

Conjuring a Herd of Buffalo From Steel, Wood and Burlap
Rather than using the type of idealisd stance previously used for mythological figures in architectural sculptures, Derwent Wood portrayed Mercury in a much more naturalistic stance, a choice that was much criticised when it was first unveiled.
Mercury, the Roman god of commerce, merchants, travellers and thieves, is depicted sitting on a throne made of a globe combined with sailing ships and sea monsters, a reference to Glasgow's maritime mercantile history.
I love this statue of Mercury by Francis Derwent Wood sitting in a baldacchino (a canopy over an altar or throne) above the entrance to the 1897 Mercantile Chambers on Bothwell Street in Glasgow.

Reminds me of a New Orleans Jazz Funeral!

He was even given his own rubber boots to help protect his feet. This statue was created by people serving time in HMP Barlinnie.
A new statue of Wallace the Fire Dog on display in Central Station in Glasgow. After following a fire engine home on day in 1894, Wallace became a mascot for the firemen at the Central Fire Station in Ingram Street until his death in 1902.
