A screen encourages speed. Sculpture asks you to move.
You have to walk around it, change distance, notice weight and scale.
Maybe physical art matters partly because our bodies are still part of looking.
An ark has come ashore at Powerhouse Arts in Brooklyn with its immersive installation of animal sculptures by over fifty artists. As in the old story of a flooded world, animals board this ark at a time of climate crisis and social upheaval, and the exhibition poses questions about how or if humans care about our planet's future as much we care about our beloved pets.

A sculpture doesnt need to be monumental to feel powerful.
Sometimes a fragile material, a damaged surface or an uncomfortable figure creates more tension than scale ever could.
Love these rather weird-looking grotesques on Saint Mary's Episcopal Cathedral on Great Western Road in Glasgow. It was designed by George Gilbert Scott and was built in the 1870s.

Wortspiel (Wordplay)
I wasnt sure I had anything for this theme, but heres Deborah Kass OY/YO sculpture in front of the Brooklyn Museum. Seen as YO when you approach from one direction and OY from the other, its supposed to pay tribute to the slang vocabulary of Brooklyns Italian, Black, and Jewish communities. I feel the concept borders a bit on cringey stereotyping, but I do think the big yellow letters are fun.

This is a statue of da Vinci in the Moses Jacob Ezekiel statuary garden. Other artists are here too but there is no rivalry, just quiet contemplation. What would he be thinking of us Maybe that we confuse frivolous inventions with true innovation. Or that we conflate a creative process with wanton destruction. How we aim for the stars (or the moon or Mars) without the reverence for nature.
Haven't seen Nolan's Odyssey, but I've seen Robert Wilson's one. Two quite different approaches to myth and art.

Well, this is my project from yesterday at the Sculpture Workshop. The aim was to practice bringing out a shape from the stone.
To that extent, I'm pleased with the different depths achieved within the almost straight lines of the border.
The ears should have been finer, this is result of having to cut them back deeper into the stone. A bit 'Wallace & Gromit' the tutor said. Mouth, nose and eyes poorly drawn.
Overall, for a beginner, not too bad and I loved the 2 day experience.

It can be seen in the Nationalgalerie, Berlin. Artur Volkmann stepped away from the classical ideal in this sculpture - no heroising or affectation. Just rendering an everyday representation.
The Henry Moore Institute currently has an exhibition connecting folklore, sculpture, video games and digital culture.
That combination makes perfect sense to me. Folklore was always a technology for creating imaginary worlds. We just changed the tools.
