Today's purchase, a Kota Mbulu Ngulu Figure, Gabon. Copper, wood and iron. Early 20th century.

These figures are unique in African art for combining wood and hammered metal.

Served as guardians for reliquary baskets or bark boxes holding ancestral remains.

The lozenge-shaped base was attached to the container. Made of wood covered in copper and brass. Stylized form represents an idealized ancestor, not a portrait.

Creation of these figures largely ceased around 1930 due to the spread of Christianity.

They are considered rare.

We had some time to walk around Punta Arenas at the end of our excursion and found ourselves drawn to the shoreline and the shallow, calm water. Along the promenade we came across this sculpture, erected just a couple of years before in 2014 to honour the crew of the schooner Ancud. Captained by Juan Williams Wilson, this schooner was involved in an instrumental expedition in 1843 to establish Chilean sovereignty in the area and the figures atop the ship are those of some of the 23 crew members aboard at the time.

Here is my latest Tiki Moai necklace i made. I sculpted it out of castilene and casted it in Resin, then painted to give it an old stone look. I will be adding them to my shop, and bringing some to Tiki Inferno in June.

Love this newly carved bench in the Biodiversity Garden in Victoria Park in Glasgow. It's been created in association with Friends of Victoria Park.

From my trip in Jan 2020: A monument to the revolutionary leader Gabriela Silang, shown here on horseback, wielding a bolo as she leads her troops against the Spanish colonizers. She faces the Peninsula Hotel with its international tourists, as if still trying to drive off wealthy invaders. Some struggles are never-ending but worth the fight.

Batman update

It's progressing nicely.

When I started this, I had barely worked with Blender's Texture Paint, as I usually prefer high-polygon sculpting with vertex painting.

So, after several hours of texture painting I saved the scene and exited Blender Only to discover that I had forgotten to save the texture as well.

Another lesson learned.

Je vais tenter d'diter mes prochains posts via Pixelfed parce que l o je me suis cale sur Mastodon, je suis frustre par la limite du nombre de caractres et d'images par post.
Je suis en train de m'auto-suivre et m'auto-booster dans tous les sens, je n'y entrave miette, si quelqu'un.e a des conseils, je me jette dessus.
Pour illustrer peut-tre, ci-joint le crne de Marguerite, sculpture ralise il y a deux ans pile pour une pice de thtre. C'est un crne de vache chelle 1.25 (oui) en polystyrne sculpt, rsine acrylique et patin l'acrylique.

Working on a little experiment, trying to convert a Batman artwork by the skilled Max Grecke to 3D as faithfully as possible.

Instead of focusing on modeling, as I usually do, I'm putting the emphasis on transferring the texture, which takes a lot of work in Blender Texture Paint.
