Well, this is my project from yesterday at the Sculpture Workshop. The aim was to practice bringing out a shape from the stone.
To that extent, I'm pleased with the different depths achieved within the almost straight lines of the border.
The ears should have been finer, this is result of having to cut them back deeper into the stone. A bit 'Wallace & Gromit' the tutor said. Mouth, nose and eyes poorly drawn.
Overall, for a beginner, not too bad and I loved the 2 day experience.
Mannelijk pisToday's Flickr photo with the most hits: Naked Youth - Volkmann.
It can be seen in the Nationalgalerie, Berlin. Artur Volkmann stepped away from the classical ideal in this sculpture - no heroising or affectation. Just rendering an everyday representation.
The Henry Moore Institute currently has an exhibition connecting folklore, sculpture, video games and digital culture.
That combination makes perfect sense to me. Folklore was always a technology for creating imaginary worlds. We just changed the tools.
Sculpted figures believed to be of the builder Hugh Wilson (left) and the architect William M. Whyte (right) on an 1886 tenement building they constructed together on Queen's Drive overlooking Queen's Park in Glasgow.

"A collection of 30 crow statues was randomly placed throughout the sidewalks of Portland on Aug. 7. Each sculpture, an enlarged replica of a crow from the upcoming Laika movie Wildwood, has been hand-painted by local artists."

Alicia Penalba (1913-1982)
Alicia Penalba (1913-1982) was an Argentine sculptor, tapestry designer, and weaver. via W #PalianSHOWBack to the Sculpture workshop soon for my individual project. It finishes at 3.30pm, then I go for the train back to Darlington.
Therein lies a problem. I'd like to get this home today but it weighs about 10kg. It will fit in my bag but now wishing I'd packed a small backpack into my bag.
Small but powerful, the Atempus Ansible is plus shieldwise for radiation and gravity. Doubleplus securing entangled comms anywhere to anywhere.
Feel doubleplus safewise knowing the State is always watching, always safekeeping, and you are always connected.
This piece was the second commission from a guy who just stumbled into my work one day. He was reluctantly pulled along to an art fair by his wife. When he first walked into my space he just stood looking around with a grin so set into his face I thought he was high. 20, 30, 40 minutes and I finally asked him if he had any questions. His answer: "No my brother, you already gave me the answers. You see it too." Not what I was expecting. We have stayed in touch ever since. I don't know what he does for a living, it's never come up. But I do know he has an office at home and if he meets people in real life, it's there. I also know that my pieces take up space in that office. And when asked about them, what they are, that kind of thing, he will reply with: "I'm not allowed to discuss temporal displacement with you." . Or something similar. He'll call me, often, when those events happen. He loves putting his clients into our universe.
Look what I did today! An external round surface and an internal curve. There is even a flat surface carved out, if you can get your head around that.
I made two schoolboy errors. In my enthusiasm, I gouged a little too deeply and knocked off a tiny bit of internal corner. I still can't believe I did that in a day.
More to come tomorrow!

"Pierced Form is a strange term for the lovely curves in many of the rounded sculptures which surround the negative space of a hole as developed in Barbara Hepworths transitional works"

A memorial to John Stewart who founded the City of Glasgow Friendly Society in 1862. This sculpture, on the city's Douglas Street, is by William Kellock Brown. The aim of the City of Glasgow Friendly Society was to 'enable members of the industrial classes to arrange with one another for mutual aid during sickness or on the arrival of old age'.

After his death, this sculptural work was completed by Mortimer, Wilson and Graham. This was fitting as Jack Mortimer had trained with Dawson in the 1920s.
Sculpture of Jesus, flanked by St Matthew, St Mark, St Luke and St John on Gillespie, Kidd and Coia's 1930s St Columbkillie's Church on Main Street in Rutherglen. The sculptures are by Archibald Dawson, one of the last great architectural sculptors who worked on Glasgow's buildings, and represent what is probably his final work before his died in 1938.
